I came from an engineering and project management background, so I decided to apply for the Engineering Management program.
I learned that engineering and management can coexist in the real world and that’s what I’m doing today. There’s a lot of human management and that’s the biggest takeaway from the program that I use today in my role.
I manage a team of software engineers, so I’ve applied the people management, leadership and engineering management skills. I’m required to understand how to coach my team and manage their career progression. I think these are things that are applicable right now from the program, from the Introduction to Engineering Management course.
The second thing is that in that course, we had to really learn how to be entrepreneurial. Imagine if you’re working in a company and you have an idea, how do you bring that idea from the ideation phase to implement the idea and grow the idea? This is something that I’ve been doing in my role. I’ve learned how to bring my ideas to stakeholders and present a proposal to my leaders to get a budget to do what we need to do.
